Penguin Facts:

They were once called “jackass Penguins” due to their donkey-like braying calls.  Reckless pilchard and anchovy fishing along with uncontrolled penguin egg harvesting and guano scarping nearly drove the species to extinction towards the turn of the century.  From just two breeding pairs in 1982, the colony has fortunately grown to about 3,000 in recent years.

Other things to see at Boulders Beach: Beside being able to wander free with the penguins, Boulders Beach is also a great whale watching location with its elevated boardwalks.  There are also a handful of bathing beaches tucked away these gigantic boulders, wonderful for picnics, laying out, and taking a dip amongst the amazing rocks.

Tips:  The boardwalk along beaches is called Willis Walk, this walk is FREE.  So, if you just want to stroll along and see a few penguins alongside take this route.  But if you don’t mind spending a whopping $30.00 R (which is about $3.00 dollars) you should most definately enter the beaches and the waterfront boardwalk.  Trust me it’s worth it.  Hundreds of penguins, I mean hundreds. 

Now, if you check out the beaches they might be a bit crowed. Luckily, I found a area thats quite secluded and away from all the tourist hot spots. If you are coming south on the Main Road, skip the first entrance gate, that is where you will find most of the crowds. Drive a couple hundred meters away and park in the second car park.  You can choose to enter the second entrance gate here. If you walk along the parking lot away from all that is happening, away from the boardwalks and the entrance ways, you’ll find a small wooden fence, go through there and walk around a little.  You’ll find lots of penguins and some great scenic photos.  CHEERS!
